Focus on the “What,” not the “How,” when Manifesting

We have all had those times in our life when we really, really, REALLY wanted to make something happen or manifest in our lives.  Maybe it was a specific job at a specific company.  Or a situation that you wanted resolved in exactly one way.  Or there was an item that you really wanted for yourself.

As energetic beings, we have an incredible power within us to be able to manifest and attract exactly what we want in life.    Our thoughts and desires connect with the energy of the Universe, which then works to bring what we want to us.  Of course, with this type of power also comes responsibility: if we are not clear and specific about what we want, the Universe will still work to bring us something.  I once kept saying I needed a break.  What I meant was a vacation, but I didn’t clarify this.  So, instead, the Universe gave me several broken bones!

Having a clearly defined vision of what we want to manifest is necessary.  However, many people take this a step further and define not only what they want to manifest, but exactly how they want it to manifest.  This is a mistake.

Don’t get me wrong,  Having a plan and acting on it is important.  However, when we give the Universe specific directions on how we want something to manifest, we actually end up limiting ourselves and what we are manifesting.  We may end up missing out on something that is even better than what we had been asking for or causing ourselves unnecessary pain!

About 10 years ago, I was living on the East Coast. One of my good friends and I had an annual tradition: we would sit down on New Year’s Day together and define and share our resolutions for the year.  On that morning I work up and decided that I wanted to move to the West Coast.  I told my friend that I wanted to sell my house and move to San Francisco.  She was shocked (to say the least) and began asking me all sorts of questions about how I was going to do it.  I told her that I didn’t know how I was going to do it, but that I intended to sell my house and move that year.

The next day I went into work and mentioned to my coworkers that I had decided to sell my house.  One of them immediately said, “I’ll buy it.”  I had held a holiday party a couple of weeks prior and invited a bunch of family, friends and coworkers.  She and her husband had attended.  We agreed on a price, and just like that, my house was sold.

I selected a weekend in February to go to San Francisco to find an apartment.  Everyone told me that I was crazy to think that I could find an apartment in a city that was in the midst of a major housing shortage that was driving rents up.  I went with the request to the Universe that not only would the apartment be one that would take my cat and dog, but it would also be affordable, have parking, and be in a safe neighborhood.  I found two, actually, and selected the one that was closer to the heart of the city.

The entire process of selling my house, finding a new place to live, and moving cross-country ended up being completely stress free and easy. Within 100 days of saying I wanted to sell my house and move to San Francisco, I had.  Everything fell into place with no effort on my part, and worked out in a way that I could never have imagined.

If I had gone in with any pre-conceived notions of exactly how everything should have occurred, I would have created expectations and the resulting stress when it didn’t go exactly as I had envisioned.  And I might never have manifested something as perfect as what the Universe brought to me.

So as you focus on manifesting what you want in your life, remember to focus on the “what:” what is it that you want to manifest in your life? Be as detailed as you want, but ask that the Universe bring you what you asked for or something better. And then leave the “how” to the Universe, and be open to how it is brought to you!
