Friday, December 21 is the Winter Solstice.
The Mayans believed that the annual cycle of the sun represented a spiritual path of enlightenment that they could follow throughout the year. Each solar year was an opportunity to increase one’s consciousness. The sun symbolized the phases someone seeking spirit evolution would go through.
- The fall equinox – death, darkness and going within
- The winter solstice – birth, creation and awakening
- The spring equinox – growth and resurrection
- The summer solstice – triumph, ascension and consciousness
The Winter Solstice is a time of transformation, regeneration and rebirth. While it is the shortest and darkest day of the year, it signifies a turning point and the dawning of creation and the “birth” of the sun. Out of the chaos of darkness comes the sun and enlightenment! This is a time of finding your inner light – your spiritual source of creation – and letting it grow to reach its full strength at the Summer Solstice.
It can be a magical time to celebrate the birth, creation and awakening of the physical and spiritual sun. Some ideas include:
Light a candle as darkness falls and meditate on how one candle can dispel the darkness.
- Count your blessings and set an intention for the upcoming year
- Build a bonfire and celebrate the return of the sun
- Hold a feast and celebrate with friends and family
- Watch the sun rise and greet the day with joy
How do you celebrate the Winter Solstice?

Yes, I will light a candle, too. It’s always a quiet, reflective time for me.
