Love.
How can one simple word be so complex? It is filled with expectations, high hopes, joy, heartache, desire, pain, and for some, is a lifelong quest. We deeply crave it, and sometimes deny giving it to ourselves. Love is so complex that the ancient Greeks identified seven types of love:
- Eros: sexual or passionate love
- Philia: friendship and goodwill love
- Storge: the love between a parent and child
- Agape: universal or unconditional love
- Ludus: playful/uncommitted love
- Pragma: duty-based practical love
- Philautia: self-love (both healthy and unhealthy)
Love is never far from our minds. We see it in our families and with friends. Songs idolize or damn it. We’re bombarded with images of what love is supposed to look like. Pretty much every movie out there – including action, adventure and horror – has some element of love in it, and may even set some unrealistic standards for love. (Thank you Hallmark Channel…I still love you.)
Love is probably the number one thing that my clients bring up during their shamanic sessions. They want to learn how to love themselves, or they are in a relationship that doesn’t bring them joy, or they’re searching for that special someone and want to figure out what is causing the delay.
We have so many questions about love…which is why I’m excited to announce that I will be part of the first-ever Love Summit with Irene Weinberg, author of They Serve Bagels in Heaven! The Love Summit is a free hour-long event where a panel of people (Irene, Lane Michel, Lorna Smith and myself) will explore love from a variety of perspectives:
- What is love?
- Why is love a courageous activity?
- How do we learn to love ourselves and others?
- Can you recover from a relationship that has ended?
- And much more!
Plus, the panel members will be taking questions. So if you’ve got questions, please plan on joining us on Monday, February 11 at 5 p.m. Pacific/8 p.m. Eastern. Registration is free but required to attend. You can register here.
I hope you join us!
